AMSA 2018 Conference Recap: 99 Years & Counting
Independent movers power up. Being professional is paramount to everything we do. Claims gone wrong. Online reviews are still a thorn in our side. Women empowering women.
These are just a few themes that resonated with most of the attendees at this year's American Moving & Storage Association Annual Conference and Expo.
2018 – AMSA's 99th conference – is proving to be the year of elevating customer service in our industry and powering up your technology and sales stack to prepare for the upcoming moving season.
Some of the best highlights of every AMSA conference are the education sessions. They serve as incredible opportunities for everyone in the industry to learn and grow their businesses. From professionalism to the legal ins and outs of the industry, the education sessions were incredibly valuable and plentiful.
Merril Hoge’s powerful keynote address to the industry was an excellent example of how professionalism can pave the way to success overcoming tremendous adversity, a lesson that is sure to resonate with many members of the audience as we head into the busy season of 2018 and beyond.
In the moving industry, our companies live and die on our reputations with our customers. Professionalism is of the utmost importance and that goes for the owners all the way to the men and women moving and driving our business, both literally and figuratively.
MoveHQ is live and now available
This AMSA was especially exciting for the MoveHQ team because, technically speaking, it was our first! While IGC and ACI have attended many AMSA conferences, this was the first since we merged to form MoveHQ.
With over 40 years of combined experience, MoveHQ Co-Presidents Brian Ferguson and Joe Bippen have grown MoveHQ into the most widely used software service in the moving and storage industry. As our company scales, our mission remains the same: help moving companies grow through technology.
MoveHQ will roll out our entire suite of products throughout 2018:
HQ Engagement - Now live! Utilizing Updater’s platform, which processes 20% of all moves in the country, that is hundreds of thousands of moves every month, and also featuring the MoveIQ tool, the future of HQ Engagement is wildly exciting.
HQ Sales - Delivers surveying and estimating capabilities for multiple lines of business along with digital imaging, electronic signatures, and paperless documents among many more features.
HQ Management - The most comprehensive move management solution, powered by the industry's best-of-breed mobile applications.
HQ Driver - Streamlines order processing by automating the inventory and shipment paperwork process.
HQ Warehouse - enables seamless management of all packing material and moving equipment both in the warehouse and on-site for projects.
Together, these products serve as the complete end-to-end solution to run your entire moving and storage business. We are excited to partner with the most progressive agents and build the next generation of technology for the moving industry.
The Summit Award
This conference was not just an opportunity to showcase MoveHQ, but also celebrate the incredible achievement of our parent company, Updater. Updater won the prestigious 2017 Summit Award, which recognizes outstanding performance among our industry’s suppliers.
With IGC and ACI both being past recipients of the award, we could not be happier to have Updater join the esteemed club!

AMSA members in the giving spirit
One of our favorite elements of the AMSA conference every year is the overarching theme of giving and charity on full display throughout the week. Moving companies open their wallets to support the Moving & Storage Institute and scholarships for individuals in the industry who are interested in pursuing a business career or a career related to the household goods moving industry.
In an interesting live auction twist, American Relocation, Ace Relocation Systems, Able Moving & Storage all paid a set of tickets to next year's Masters forward by donating the bid to Move For Hunger and passing the item along to the next lucky bidder. Move For Hunger raised an unexpected $7200! Way to open your hearts to two deserving organizations.
A huge shout out goes to all companies who donated their time, money, and support to all of the causes championed over the course of the conference!
Empowering women in moving
For the third year running, AMSA hosted a meetup for women in the moving industry consisting of women who work for household goods movers and suppliers so that they can share ideas and best practices, evaluate organizational communication strategies, and build strong relationships.
Along with the Women in Moving event, the AMSA Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to a woman, for the third year in a row. Girl power! Congratulations to Katrina Blackwell, President of American Red Ball Transit Company, who breaks the mold with nearly everything she does, champions young professionals and women in the industry, and has helped the industry grow and implement innovative technology!
A bright future ahead
We couldn’t have asked for a better experience at this year’s AMSA conference. Thanks to everyone that visited us at our booth and we look forward to seeing you in Houston (in the Texas shaped lazy river) next year!
